Tiger Tail Vodka

I abhor black licorice, but when a friend asked for an infused vodka that tasted like tiger tail ice cream (orange-flavoured ice cream with black licorice swirl), I knew that I had to at least try to create something similar for her!

Ingredients

  • one mason jar
  • half of a navel orange, sliced thinly and quartered
  • 10 star anise seeds
  • 2 cups of vodka (I use the Kirkland Signature American Vodka from Costco because it's good + cheap.)
  • cheesecloth
Add the orange and five of the anise seeds to the mason jar and then add your vodka. Seriously, that's pretty much all the hard work.

Now what you need to do is shake the jar two times a day (I pretend that I'm playing the maracas when I'm shaking the jars...because I'm lame like that) and store it out of the direct sunlight.

Open the jar daily to check on the flavour; when you infuse with any type of citrus there's a fine line between it tasting amazing or tasting bitter (thanks, pith). When the flavour is to your liking, grab a clean mason jar and use a square of cheesecloth to strain the oranges and anise seeds out of the vodka.

Mine was the perfect orangey taste after three days, but the black licorice was underwhelming so after straining out the orange pieces and anise seeds I popped five fresh anise seeds back into the vodka. I let it sit (with the twice daily shaking) for two more days before straining the remaining anise seeds out.

Store the infused vodka in cool dark place and it should last just fine for six months!

How to drink

Keep it simple and let the flavours shine on their own by mixing it with soda water.
